Very nice to see ducks and geese slowly returning to the Marshall Springs ponds. It is about one third thawed, from the winter freeze over, at the time of this photo. It's not very photogenic yet, but hopefully things will start to green up within a few weeks time.
I've personally never seen this species of bird before, so it was a real nice treat to get a few pictures of them. They're smaller than I expected (15-17 cm), as I have read about them in books before. White-winged Crossbills have a perfectly designed bill to pry open spruce cones to get at the seeds.
