Sharing photos captured in the first half of August, 2022 here.
I started an Instagram account a few weeks ago..something very new for me. If you happen to have an account, and you're interested in taking a look, my handle there is @richie.hannah.ab or you can access it via the link in the top corner of this website. I like it for the most part, but there's a couple of things I don't really care for too. I've found that you can just ignore the parts you don't like, and realize/accept that's just the way it is.
Quite a pleasant surprise to see these little ones paddling along the pond water's surface during a visit to the Marshall Springs ponds in Fish Creek Provincial Park on the morning of August 6th. I thought we were well past the time of year where we'd see Ducklings so young around here.
'Full Sturgeon Moonset / Calgary Tower' (below)
Went to bed on the evening of the 10th..morning's weather forecast was for mostly cloudy..set the alarm clock for early anyway. Got up early on the 11th..weather forecast had been upgraded to partly cloudy. Washed up, gathered gear, drove 33 km to my, planned ahead, shooting location. Set up, and captured the Full Moon setting aligned with the top of the Calgary Tower! Afraid I just wasn't able to achieve the desired sharpness in these photos I was looking for though. Local haze, atmospheric distortion/shimmers, and potentially my error in manual focusing were all factors at play leading to these soft images at the time of capture. Acquiring tack sharp focus when shooting in the dark, and zoomed in to a 700 mm focal range, is definitely the thing I find the most challenging when shooting photos like this..the auto-focus feature on the equipment is totally useless this kind of darkness. Ahhh..so close, but no cigar I'm afraid lol.

I went out on the evening of August 11th for a planned photo involving the Moonrise with some Downtown Calgary buildings. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate with the plan..turned out to be too cloudy in the direction in which I was shooting, so it didn't work out. While there though I could see these lights in the sky over the Downtown area moving around in a bit of an erratic way..not like planes or helicopters move through the sky. Took a couple of pictures of what I was seeing..this is the only one that turned out somewhat half decent (below). It wasn't until I processed the photo on the computer that I could tell what was going on with these odd light that were so very far away. It appears in the photo that the top of the tallest building has a retractable door on the angled part, near the top. These lights turned out to be drones..seems they were being flown in and out of that door. huh..who knew!?
